Hi Bro/Sis, I'm new here. Just registered. Had not rode for 20 yrs and am thinking of riding again. Being more mature now (ahem, old actually), with family and kind of KS (afriad to die). It's not like those young days when we just wear a denim jeans plus jacket, a sneaker and a $50 helmet and off i go.
Trying to do a budget on the riding gear (safe) that i shall need to start off. Suggestion please, something cheap & safe, as i'm working with a very limited budget |

sorry for the late reply
1st thing 1st .. a proper helmet ..
if you are riding a big bike .. a full face is a must .. try SOL for approx RM400 or RM250 for local brand Michel with SIRIM certification
Forget about the cheap but good looking clones from Jalan Ipoh. They are not worth the look as they offer no protection in event of a crash
for riding jacket.. a mesh textile iZ2 with all the protection goes for about RM250-270
Riding pants (Cordura) another RM300
And a gud pair of leather gloves can be had for RM100-120
Finally, ride boots range from RM200 from Pertama to RM1000 for a pair of imported. Gearne makes reasonable priced water-proof touring boot for around RM500-600
Alternatively, good hiking boots makes good motorcycle boots
Just make sure the laces don't get tangled with your shift / brake pedals
May I know what you ride ?
Different bikes (cruiser vs sports vs standard etc) 'ngam' with different ride gears
PM me or email me if you need further information

wah... Kenny.. full detailed info!! Great stuff!
I can vouch for the Gaerne waterproof boots, coz i bought a pair from Mecinda for rm500 and they are superb! Quality and comfort, wonderful! rode in rain for 2 hours straight, only my feet were dry.
Raymond... if you are a bit tight on budget and don't really want to spend on Cordura overpants yet, u can also get a pair of good kneeguards, which are versatile so u can wear them over any pair of jeans u want in case you are sweating like an oink oink in the heat. heheh...
I should know, my rear end sweats non stop. So unglamorous.
There are also 'steel' jeans available from Draggin' Jeans and other brands, i think Joe Rocket and Icon as well. So u don't need to change your pants at the destination, just remove the kneeguards.
Ok.. all those steel jeans and normal jeans still don't provide as much protection as Cordura pants but Darn!! Cordura is plenty hot leh. And if you're no speed demon, planning to ride leisurely, good solid jeans are still good for basic use.
All depends on you.
Must haves are always... fullface helmet, good gloves, armored jacket and kneeguards.
I started with my Timberland boots which are great!
Don't forget to let us know what bike u're getting |

Thank Guys for the details. Shall check out your recommendations on the internet.
By the way, i think certain items (riding boots) are kind of pricey in Malaysia, something to do with out duty? Wonder if we could get a better 'Bang for Bucks' in Places like Singapore / Hong Kong or Australia? The SOL helmet is affordable, but not sure on the comfort (weight) and safety level.
Still looking into the riding gear first. Has not budgeted for the 'Ride'. Maybe can hitch a ride with one of you guys, hehehe
Am thinking of going Naked / Enduro/ Motard, i just love Naked bikes. Had not shortlisted any, but i'll like a bike wih good low end torque (don't go fast anyway, hehehe), light weight, tourer (long distance), hmmmm, don't like chopper style (easy rider) I read the Kawasaki, think it's 6 NR? selling for 30K for a CKD bike, is it a good buy? Prefer a new bike, rather than taking on someone's problem, hehehe. The Aprilla Magna / BMW 800 R looks cool, but too pricey, beyond my budget. Also has to look into storing the bike as i don't ride much and stay in an apartment (when in KL).
Maybe can recommend a suitable bike? |

SOL is a SIRIM approved helmet..
not exactly DOT but at that price, it is a good tested full face helmet
moreover, the face shield is very cheap at approx RM50 a pop
Boots ..if don't mind those from India/pak/Bang .. there plenty around RM200-300
Or try from local made Fieldsheer (shop at Jln Setapak, near old Sunny Motor worksho, or directly opposite Courts)
As for motorcycle, if your budget is below 40K
The Kawa ER6N is a decent bike for the price
Good (light) touring, very affordable and proper factory support from Kawasaki
If you going for 2nd hand
Duc Monster 600 is a good choice bwlow RM25K
Or Honda CB400 also below RM25
or any of the Blade from Naza (250 or 650)
Old style dualie to consider the Kawa KLR at approx RM36K new
Mind you, Peter on a KLR with a pillion zoomed at 180km/h easily to Melaka recently
good luck |
